What is Google’s SGE generator artificial intelligence and how does it work?

If you’re an AI fan, you’ve probably heard and read a lot about how AI is changing marketing in many ways. We know that the ChatGPT product from OpenAI surprised many a while ago, but this bot is not the only artificial intelligence bot. The attractiveness of GPT chat for users led Google to invest more in artificial intelligence, and this investment led to the creation of the new Google Search Generative Experience (SGE). If you also like to get to know Google’s new artificial intelligence – which is supposed to improve the search experience for users – in this blog from the artificial intelligence company Avir, we are going to explain what SGE is and how to use it. Stay with us!

What is Google SGE?

SGE stands for Google Search Generative Experience. In May 2023, Google introduced Search Generative Experience at the I/O conference (the official conference for Google developers). Now, Google has made this AI-powered search experience (SGE) available to the public in India and Japan to test its results. This new Google artificial intelligence helps users to easily find the answer to their question on web pages. SGE provides a summary of the information generated by AI and allows users to share the answer with others.

SGE was first offered as an experimental option in the US, where people could join by signing up to the Search Labs waiting list, where Google tests different search-related ideas. The news followed Microsoft’s efforts to include ChatGPT in several of its products, including Windows, Bing, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.

SGE has designed the power of generative AI to improve the Google search experience. Whether you’re using Google Chrome on a computer, Android or iOS device, you’ll definitely notice the improvement!

Unlike chat bots like Google Bard, ChatGPT or Bing Chat, SGE is not designed just for chatting with the user. Instead, it provides concise yet comprehensive answers to your online search queries.

In recent months, Google has been trying new things with AI in its search. Google’s AI uses a special feature called Search Generative Experience (SGE) to learn from the people who test it in Google Labs. Google has improved the search experience for users by adding more capabilities such as displaying videos, images, local details and travel suggestions in the answers.

Simply put, SGE’s goal is to give you a thorough understanding of the topic you’re looking for without forcing you to scroll through multiple pages to find details.

How to use Google SGE

When you search for a topic or ask Google by voice, SGE adds a brief summary with images, lines of code, recipes, or suggestions at the top of the page. Next to the summary, you’ll see the source from which SGE got its information. Click the button on the top right to view more resources.

If you want to continue searching, below the summary, you can find the Continue button. Clicking the button will take you to a simpler chat page with less focus on listing results. At the bottom right, there is a link to Search Labs and feedback buttons up and down.

An important point is that SGE is experimental and the quality of the data may vary. As with any artificial intelligence-generating product, there is a possibility of false information being included in summaries, and sources may not always be clearly traceable. In addition, SGE may include disclaimers for certain types of queries, such as health-related searches, and may not generate summary searches in some cases.

In August 2023, Google also introduced several new sub-features for SGE.

How will Google search change with artificial intelligence?

The main changes in Google search with the help of artificial intelligence are:

Conversational understanding: Google SGE can now understand and respond to questions in a more natural, chat-like way, similar to how we talk throughout the day. This artificial intelligence helps Google search to better understand the user’s intent and provide accurate and contextually relevant search results.

AI-powered Snapshots: SGE creates snapshots with AI-generated information to answer user questions. These snapshots aggregate statistics from multiple sources to provide the best possible answers. These answers are displayed just below the search bar with a distinct background, making them stand out from the regular results.

Vertical Search: SGE is useful for certain types of searches, such as shopping or local searches, where multiple factors are involved. To purchase a product, SGE creates AI-powered snapshots of critical details such as descriptions, reviews, ratings, prices, and images. This helps users to make informed purchase choices quickly.

Comparative Results: In SGE’s new search, AI-generated snapshots compare multiple businesses side-by-side. This user-centric approach and better experience allow users to evaluate different options. For example, if someone searches for “buy a refrigerator,” SGE will show a range of resources to compare based on the user’s preferences. This personalized offer helps users find what works best for them.
